Designed in employ of Bernard Stein Architect, Oakland (architect of record).
This was Andrew's first accessibility project, and, after more than sixteen years in service, it remains one of his favorites. Two steps previously situated abruptly beneath the entry arch, are replaced with a broadened landing that not only meets accessibility guidelines, but also provides an appropriately scaled threshold to this venerable but architecturally understated community institution. New wider steps frame the neo-classical entry, and a gentle ramp approaches from the side. The public sidewalk is widened to create a curb-side drop-off area, and scribed in a diagonal pattern as a welcoming carpet. All elements combine to provide a gracious counter-point to the long stretch of building and sidewalk to either side.
