| Born, raised, and educated in tradition-bound Virginia, Andrew transplanted to Northern California in 1988 for "just a couple years of grad school in Berkeley - on the other side of the fence". The Bay Area, with its multiplicity of traditions, its delightful cultural complexity, its benevolent climate, and its striking geography, soon seduced the young student. Andrew practiced in a wide range of project types while working in the offices of several established East Bay architects before opening Woolman Architecture in 1999. To this day, he enjoys engaging design problems of all stripes, and side-steps specialization. Equally comfortable in the interpersonal world of custom residential design or in the fast-paced pressure-cooker of commercial work, Andrew approaches each architectural project as a singular marriage of function, place, and people. In the best works, built form will derive from and celebrate each of these in measurable ways.
Andrew is married to Angie, a very talented quilt artist; together they are blessed with and tested by two wonderful daughters, one out of college and the other in high school. In his spare time, Andrew enjoys working on his family's home in Albany. He also enjoys gardening, plays and coaches competitive (youth) soccer, and is a fan and modeler of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway of his native Virginia.
